What to do when your kids return from seeing their other parent

By Rhiannon Ford

One of the most challenging issues separated parents face, is no longer being with their children 24/7. It is natural to miss the children whilst they are not with you and/or to worry about them having a good time with their other parent. So, what should you do when your kids return from seeing their other parent?

Firstly, remember that the children need to have a relationship with both of their parents.

When they return from spending time with their other parent, priority needs to be given to what the children need from you.

Here are 5 things to remember:

Give them space.

When they first return from seeing their other parent, give the kids some space. Don’t bombard them with questions about their visit.

Time to decompress.

They will need time to decompress and adjust to being back with you. Create a calm space for them and let them open up as and when they are ready.

Let them talk.

Let them talk about their other parent. Put aside your own feelings towards your ex. Avoid snide remarks or criticisms. Be respectful. They are your child’s other parent.

Keep things simple.

If you are struggling to say something positive keep it simple. Listen to what the kids say and then tell them you are pleased they had a good time.

Process your emotions separately.

and not in front of the kids. They should not see you upset about them spending time with their other parent. They should not feel guilty for loving both parents.
