Frequently Asked Questions – Divorce Support & Guidance
Going through separation or divorce often brings a lot of questions, both practical and emotional. On this page, you’ll find clear, straightforward answers to some of the questions I’m most often asked about divorce consultancy, coaching, and support services.
As a former family law solicitor and now an experienced divorce consultant, I provide professional, confidential guidance to help individuals at every stage of the divorce process, from early separation to life beyond.
If your question isn’t answered here, you’re very welcome to get in touch for a confidential chat.
What is a divorce coach/consultant?
A divorce consultant (or coach) supports you through the emotional, practical, and
strategic aspects of divorce. They do not give legal advice but help you clarify goals,
organise information, prepare for meetings, improve communication, and manage
stress – providing guidance and support so you feel informed, confident, and in control.
How is a divorce coach/consultant different to a lawyer?
A divorce solicitor provides legal advice and can represent you in your legal case. A divorce consultant/coach offers guidance and support through the emotional, practical, and financial aspects of divorce but cannot give legal advice or represent you.
Why would I need a divorce consultant/coach if I already have a solicitor?
A solicitor looks after the legal side of your divorce. A divorce consultant or coach looks after you. I can help you manage the emotional stress, stay organised, prepare for solicitor meetings, and make clearer decisions. By working alongside your solicitor, I can save you time, reduce legal costs, and give you the practical and emotional support that the legal process alone does not cover.
Do you give legal advice?
No, I don’t provide formal legal advice. However, I can explain legal information, legal processes as well as translating legal jargon. Your solicitor’s role is to provide you with legal advice.
How would you help me when I’ve made the decision to get a divorce?
Some examples of the help I can give at this stage are:
- Listening to your story to provide emotional support for your circumstances
- Providing legal information and options
- Explaining legal processes
- Helping create an action plan for your next steps
How would you help once I’m in the legal process?
I can:
- Help you complete legal forms.
- Explain legal jargon in plain English.
- Prepare you for meetings/mediation and/or attending court.
- Accompany you to court and meetings.
- Guide you to communicate effectively with your solicitor, mediator and your ex.
- Support you with practical and personal non-legal issues.
How would you help once my divorce has finished?
I can:
- Provide practical help to implement the financial order
- Give coaching support to help you through the transitional period
Do you work with clients who are not married but separating?
Yes, I do. I work with both married and unmarried clients who are going through a separation.
What is your background?
I am an ex-divorce solicitor. After leaving private practice, I trained as a personal
development coach. I have over 25 years’ experience working with people going through divorce and separation.
Can you help me with Form E (i.e. financial disclosure information)?
Yes. I can:
- Explain what and how to collect the financial information you need,
- Provide you with practical help to complete the Form itself and the Expenses Form
(Income Needs Schedule), and - Review your completed Forms and help you prepare to send them to your solicitor
or the court.
Note: If you need help now, then check out ‘The Ultimate Form E Support Bundle‘, which includes three eBooks to help you understand and complete your Form E – click here for more information.
Can you work with both of the couple?
No, I only work with one person in the couple.
Are you a mediator?
No. Mediators work with the couple together to facilitate discussions to help them reach a settlement regarding financial matters and/or child issues. But I can guide and support you through your mediation process.
Are you a counsellor/therapist?
No. My work as a consultant and coach is solution-focused, taking you from where you are now (i.e. the beginning or middle of your divorce), to where you need to get to (i.e. the end of the divorce process). I can refer my clients to a therapist where appropriate.
Can you work with people outside the UK?
Yes, provided the divorce is to take place under the legal jurisdiction of England and Wales.
