If you are coming up to a final hearing in your family court case, you will be familiar with the inside of a courtroom. But (unless you are representing yourself), it is unlikely you have been asked to speak in court. Your barrister or solicitor will have spoken on your behalf.
Your solicitor has probably explained to you that, at your Final Hearing, you will be asked questions about your case to help the judge to make a final decision about your legal case.
Answering questions in court is known as ‘giving evidence’.
If you have never done this before, this might feel daunting. You will want to present yourself in the best light to the judge. This will help the judge to understand and support your legal position and could help them to make a favourable decision.
Your solicitor and barrister are limited in what help they can provide for you about your oral evidence. You may also have been told that you cannot bring a friend or relative in the courtroom with you. Please do not worry. You are not on your own. I am here to help.
Witness preparation training

- Some people give evidence over a video link rather than in person. If this applies, we will go through some tips on how to make sure your evidence still makes a positive impact.
