What is gas lighting? It is a form of domestic abuse.
It involves one of the couple manipulating the other to believe their thoughts/opinions and memories of a situation are wrong.
It happens over a period of time and builds up to the victim doubting themselves and their recollection of events and situations.
Examples could be regular comments like:
“No, that’s not what happened. You’ve got a bad memory.”
“I didn’t say that. You’ve made that up”.
“It’s all in your head. You’re going mad”.
The abuser will be manipulating the victim to believing what they want them to believe which will involve the victim taking the blame for things that have happened and thinking they are in the wrong.
It is a form of psychological abuse and over a period of time can cause real damage to a person’s self belief and confidence. Many victims of this type of abuse don’t realise they are being abused. They believe they are in the wrong and/or are a bad person.
