I’m often asked for advice about how to navigate a narcissistic partner. It is challenging to be in a relationship with a partner who exhibits narcissistic traits as their behaviour can be unpredictable, manipulative, and emotionally draining.
Here are some strategies that may help:
Set boundaries.
It’s important to establish clear boundaries with a narcissistic partner, such as what behaviours are acceptable and what are not. Be firm and consistent in enforcing these boundaries.
Focus on your own needs.
It can be easy to get caught up in a narcissistic partner’s demands and
needs, but it’s important to prioritise your own well-being. Take time for self-care and pursue your own interests.
Don’t engage in their drama.
Narcissistic individuals often thrive on drama and attention. Avoid getting sucked into their drama or arguments, and instead, focus on staying calm and assertive.
Seek support.
It can be helpful to talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist about your experiences with a narcissistic partner. This can provide a safe space to vent and receive emotional support.
Consider leaving the relationship.
In some cases, a narcissistic partner may be unwilling or unable to change their behaviour, and staying in the relationship may be harmful to your well-being. If this is the case, it may be necessary to consider leaving the relationship.
It’s important to remember that coping with a narcissistic partner can be a difficult and ongoing process. It’s important to take care of yourself, seek support, and establish healthy boundaries to protect your well-being.
