Mrs G’s Story: Navigating a difficult divorce from her wife.

By Rhiannon Ford

Mrs G had been married to her wife for 5 years, together for 9 years. She was very unhappy and was looking for help and support to navigate ending her marriage. The couple had a 3yr old daughter.

The client was a successful business owner and the main breadwinner in the relationship. Her wife worked in the business as an employee.

Mrs G’s main goal was to be able to successfully co-parent their young daughter, once they had formalised their separation. She knew she wanted a divorce, which would not come as a surprise to her wife, but was anxious about what steps to take, the legal process and how shared parenting would work. She also needed guidance on choosing a suitable solicitor and on how best to use the solicitor, with me helping alongside.

She kindly agreed to provide some feedback about the work we are doing together:

What was going on for you that prompted you to get in touch with Rhiannon in the first place?

“Rhiannon was recommended by a friend. I started working with Rhiannon to support me to end my marriage, through mediation and into the lawyer journey.”

What in particular did you want help with when you first started working with Rhiannon?

“I wanted someone who could simplify the steps I needed to take and to make sure I was understood as a person as opposed to just another person on the conveyor belt of divorce.”

What did you find most helpful about working with Rhiannon in the early stages of your separation/divorce?

“I started working with Rhiannon as soon as I knew my marriage needed exiting. She helped me get the exit right; she helped with steps before solicitors got involved, particularly around Form E and financial disclosure. Her responsiveness is amazing, especially when important deadlines have to be hit.”

How has working with Rhiannon helped you during the legal process of your separation/divorce?

“Rhiannon helps you to see the bigger picture, whereas the lawyers are very focused on the individual step. I found it helpful to troubleshoot with Rhiannon before speaking to the lawyer.”

What have been any other benefits of working with Rhiannon?

“As well as the practical nature of coaching at each step, Rhiannon is so compassionate and really cares about the journey. She is focused on the emotional, practical, legal, financial and child parts, all simultaneously. A balancing act not for the faint-hearted.

Family law is like no other law; it is so emotionally draining, and Rhiannon holds space for the emotion whilst keeping focused on moving steps forward.”

Would you recommend Rhiannon, and if so, why?

“Yes.”

Why did you give the response you did to the above question?

“Divorce is one of the hardest things to go through, and Rhiannon is the voice of understanding, empathy and compassion when you’re so often doing this on your own.”

What would you say to someone considering getting a separation/divorce as to how Rhiannon might be able to help them?

“Especially in the early days, having the step-by-step coaching takes away the enormity of the project ahead. Rhiannon guides, supports, reflects, listens and hears.

She knows the legal system, so she is more than a coach; she is a facilitator.”

Mrs G’s case is currently ongoing, and I continue to support her alongside her solicitor. She has a strong divorce support team to help her navigate through the challenges involved in her tricky divorce.
