Mrs E had been married for 35 years, and both she and her husband were in their 60s. Her husband had recently retired and had been the main breadwinner in the marriage. He was a businessman, used to dealing with documentation and working with professionals, whilst Mrs E had worked part-time and raised the children. It was a great shock when the husband announced to Mrs E that he was gay and in a relationship with another man.
The couple were using the Resolution Together model (one couple, one lawyer), but Mrs E was feeling anxious and vulnerable that her husband was taking charge of the process, and she needed help and guidance. Her greatest fear was having to leave her home.
The work we did together included: practical help with financial documents, explaining legal processes, creating action plans, and connecting the client with other divorce professionals (a solicitor, a chartered financial planner, and a wills solicitor). Not being a businessperson, Mrs E also required practical help with emails and documents, as everything is now online. We would meet in person for me to provide hands-on help. I would also accompany her to her meetings with the solicitor. Â
