Mrs P’s Story: Discovery of Infidelity After a Long Marriage and the Loss of a Planned Retirement Together.

By Rhiannon Ford

Mrs P was recommended to me by her family law solicitor. She had been married for 42 years, together almost 50 years. Both she and her husband were in their 60s with 2 adult children. She sadly had discovered that her husband had been having affairs and was devastated. She was struggling to come to terms with the end of her marriage, when she had been looking forward to a happy retirement together.

Seeing her husband in a very different light and realising the secret life he had been living was taking its toll on Mrs P. She told me she was sad, angry and feared loneliness. They were a close family, and she didn’t want important family occasions to be difficult moving forward.

She kindly agreed to provide some feedback on the work we did together:

What was going on for you that prompted you to get in touch with Rhiannon in the first place?

“Rhiannon was recommended by my lawyer to help me navigate a very difficult separation after 50 years together.”

What in particular did you want help with when you first started working with Rhiannon?

“I discovered my husband has narcissistic qualities, so I knew I had challenges ahead. I wanted someone who understands that mindset and could help me navigate my journey to help achieve my goals.”

What did you find most helpful about working with Rhiannon in the early stages of your separation/divorce?

“Rhiannon totally understood my dilemma and provided excellent advice and support. Someone to lean on at the end of the phone/email.”

How has working with Rhiannon helped you during the legal process of your separation/divorce?

“Helped me practically with my Form E and to help me extract the information from my husband. Mine was an unusual case where my husband was in denial, so I had to tread carefully.”

What have been any other benefits of working with Rhiannon?

“She helped me understand my husband’s mindset and prepare non-confrontational emails to him.”

Would you recommend Rhiannon, and if so, why?

“Yes.”

Why did you give the response you did to the above question?

“Because it was a great added level of support. For me, much better than counselling which didn’t work for me. Rhiannon’s support was so much more practical which was what I needed.”

What would you say to someone considering getting a separation/divorce as to how Rhiannon might be able to help them?

“Practically & emotionally, the whole experience is overwhelming, and Rhiannon helps put it in perspective, and provides the smaller steps required to reach the ultimate goal.”

Any final words?

“I am in a much better place now. I managed to navigate and sign a financial separation that I am happy with. I did keep the house and can stay here. D finally moved out last November. I am fine on my own. I know I did the right thing for me. We still have family occasions together which as you know is very important to me.”

Mrs P sent me a follow-up email inviting me to meet up for coffee, and I’m looking forward to catching up on her plans and achievements since her separation was finalised.
