Divorcing a difficult ex: Hear Mr C’s story

How a divorce consultant can help when you're divorcing a difficult ex: Hear Mr C's story

Mr C was already in the legal process, divorcing a difficult ex, when we started working together.

He had a solicitor and barrister in place and court proceedings had been issued to resolve finances.

Domestic abuse.

He was a successful businessman and felt successful in other areas of his life, but was struggling with managing his wife’s manipulative and controlling behaviour. He was convinced she had narcissistic personality disorder.

He needed help and support with the personal side of getting divorced as well as guidance to help him get clarity about what he wanted to achieve and how best to instruct his legal team to make this possible.

Short-term marriage

It was a short-term marriage but his wife had unrealistic expectations of what she was entitled to in the financial settlement. She was “asking for the moon”.

Managing narcissistic abuse

What was going on for you that prompted you to get in touch with Rhiannon in the first place?

I had just started divorcing my wife who I suspect has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), I was told about divorce coaches by my solicitor, Googled for NPD coaches and found Rhiannon. My solicitor knew of Rhiannon as well.

Completing the Form E

What in particular did you want help with when you first started working with Rhiannon?

My Form E and also some emotional honest support dealing with my wife and someone who understood the disorder.

What did you find most helpful about working with Rhiannon in the early stages of your separation/divorce?

She was not only good on the counselling side she knows the legal side as well and without giving me false expectations did not sit on the fence as solicitors seem to do.

Help with strategy

How has working with Rhiannon helped you during the legal process of your divorce?

Working with Rhiannon has proved to be very calming and she has taken away a lot of worry. She has also given sound self-care advice. Rhiannon has helped with my strategy and has very good advice on staying solution-focused.

What would you say to someone considering getting a divorce as to how Rhiannon might be able to help them?

I would highly recommend it, and even before appointing a solicitor, it would I believe set someone up with a good grounding and starting as you mean to go on tackling the whole issue of divorce.

As our work together progressed, the client told me he felt more focused and confident about the way forward and how to manage his emotional triggers around his wife.
