Separated parents will need to work together to create a successful co-parenting arrangement. And the parenting plan will need to include how holidays are to be approached.
Separated parents need to consider the following:
- Agreeing on holiday schedules in advance with the other parent.
- Giving the other parent sufficient notice about your planned trips.
- Putting the children first and making sure that any arrangements remain child-focused.
- Being prepared to be flexible and co-operate.
- Providing the other parent with full details of your travel plans, including:
- Your proposed holiday dates;
- Travel plans (including flight numbers (or similar) and times);
- Details of accommodation; and
- Emergency contact details.
- Seeking agreement from the other parent for your proposed travel plans before you book but certainly do not leave it until the last minute to get their agreement.
- Always consider in advance what documents are required to travel, such as passports or European health cards.
- Checking whether the country you are visiting requires a signed letter of consent or affidavit (for example, South Africa) from the non-travelling parent.
- Agreeing on ways for the children to keep in touch with the other parent during the holidays and encouraging them to do so.
If you have problems reaching an agreement with your ex, you should take legal advice from your solicitor and/or you could use mediation.
