How to introduce your children to your new partner needs to be approached in a sensitive manner. Whilst you may be excited about your new partner, remember this is another big adjustment for the children to process and accept after their parents separated/divorced. Here is my advice on how to approach this important introduction:
1. Be confident this is a serious long term relationship and not just someone you’re dating. Don’t introduce the kids to every new partner.
2. Be careful not to rush into introducing them too soon and not thinking through carefully how best to approach it.
3. Speak to both the kids and the new partner about the meeting in advance. Don’t just spring it on them as a surprise meet. It won’t end well.
4. Make sure the first meeting takes place somewhere neutral, where the children will feel comfortable.
5. The first meeting can be fairly short and could involve an activity to take the pressure off everyone – e.g. lunch.
6. Take things slowly with your kids and your new partner spending time together. Build it up gradually.
7. Communicate with the kids’ other parent about the introduction in advance. You’re not asking for permission but making them aware.
8. Reassure the kids that they are still your number one priority. They may feel a bit threatened or be jealous of your new partner.
9. Still spend some time on your own with the kids without your new partner. Let your kids have you to themselves sometimes.
10. Allow the kids time and space to come to terms with the new person in their lives. Let them express their thoughts and feelings. Don’t expect them to accept the new person straight away. Be patient.
11. Don’t be affectionate with your new partner in front of the kids. Be considerate to them.
Please remember to take a careful and considered approach to how you introduce your new partner to your children. Prioritise the needs of the children and what’s best for them.
