How to support someone after their divorce.

By Rhiannon Ford

It is not just during the divorce itself that someone you know may need your support. It is after their divorce too.

Here are some suggestions on how best to support your friend or relative after their divorce:

  • Don’t assume they are okay now the divorce is over. Check in regularly.
  • Invite them to do activities with you. Make sure they feel involved and included.
  • Offer practical help.
  • Be aware of special occasions – dates or events that make them feel uncomfortable.
  • Give them space to talk and properly listen.
  • Make them laugh.
  • Remember you can’t fix it for them but your support will help.
  • Don’t set expectations on when and how they will feel better. Everyone is different, with their own journey.
  • Buy them a little gift to show them you support them through this significant life transition (a life after divorce notebook or journal can be a great gift). Click on the link to check out the ones available from my website: Notebooks.
