There does not seem to be enough support and advice for teenagers of divorcing parents.
Divorce can be a difficult and emotional time for everyone involved, including teenagers who are often caught in the middle.
Here is my advice to help teenagers cope with their parents’ divorce:
Remember that the divorce is not your fault.
It is common for teenagers to blame themselves for their parents’ divorce, but it is important to remember that it is not your fault. Divorce is a decision made by your parents and not something caused by you.
Do not take sides.
It is important for you not to take sides in your parents’ divorce. Avoid talking badly about one parent to the other or taking part in any arguments or conflicts.
Communicate your feelings.
Feel you can communicate your feelings to your parents or someone you trust. This will help you process your emotions and prevent them from building up inside.
Maintain a relationship with both parents.
Try to maintain a relationship with both your parents after the divorce. This will help you feel more secure and stable during this transitional period.
Seek support.
Do not be afraid to seek support from a therapist, school counsellor, or trusted family member or friend. They can offer you guidance and support as you navigate through this difficult time.
Take care of yourself.
Make sure to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally during this time. This includes; getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and engaging in activities you enjoy.
Remember.
Remember that whilst your parents’ divorce might be a difficult time, it does not have to define your life. With time and support, you can work through your emotions and continue to thrive.
