Parenting is tough at any time, but it is particularly challenging for parents who are separated. They will be in each other’s lives, for the rest of their own lives, because they have children together. So, they will need to find a way to work together for the sake of the children.
What separated parents need to remember about the children arrangements is:
You are both still parents.
You may no longer be a couple but you are still parents to your children, so you need to find a way to work together/ alongside each other for the sake of the children.
You share parental responsibility.
If both parents’ names are on the birth certificate, you
share “parental responsibility” for the children. (This refers to the legal rights, duties, and responsibilities a parent has for their child.)
The children come first.
The law relating to children makes it clear that all decisions relating to the children must be “what’s in the children’s best interests”. This takes priority over the parents’ wants or wishes.
You must put aside feelings towards your ex.
Make sure you do not get caught up in your personal feelings towards your ex. It is important to put them aside for the sake of the children.
You should avoid being competitive with your ex.
Always avoid playing games and trying to press your ex’s buttons or point scoring. It is petty and it is your children who suffer. They will get caught in the crossfire.
