Making sure we practice self care regularly can be challenging at the best of times, but it can be particularly difficult to maintain during stressful times in our lives. We may feel we just don’t have enough time or capacity to add anything else in to our already challenging lives – e.g. it may feel like something else to add to our “to do” list. But it is at these times that we need it most.
If we already had a good self care practice in place beforehand, this can help during difficult times. Not only have we been taking good care of ourselves to build up resilience and strength to deal with the challenging times, but it has probably already become part of our normal routine, so it may be easier to increase if we need to take additional measures to help our self-care.
During difficult times in our lives when our time and energies are being pulled in all directions, we need to ensure we don’t forget to take good care of ourselves, but this only need be by taking small straight forward steps. There is no need to push yourself to take on too much in the name of “self care” if in fact it is too much for you at that present time – e.g. if you are exhausted through stress, then a strenuous work-out at the gym may not be the best option. Perhaps choose something more supportive, like yoga.
When we are feeling at our lowest, every day routines can become a big deal to achieve. Someone suffering from depression for example may find getting out of bed, showering, brushing their teeth etc. challenging to accomplish. These are self care practices in themselves. Our self care practice doesn’t have to involve big gestures – e.g. spa weekends, holidays etc. We may just need to focus on the basics. Be kind to yourself and recognise what is realistic for you.
